2Tone legend Rhoda Dakar is back with another reggae infused cover after the huge success of her latest album Version Girl. Originally written by Peter Shelley of Buzzcocks, ‘I Don’t Mind’, is the latest to receive the Rhoda treatment, with artwork once again designed by Sheffield’s finest Pete McKee.
I Don’t Mind is a wonderful tribute to one of Rhoda’s all-time favourite songwriters –“In 2015, when Pete Shelley remarked on me being “back again” to see The Buzzcocks, I was finally able to say that I considered him one of our greatest living songwriters! Don’t quote me, but he may have responded with “you what?””
As with Rhoda’s previous four Sunday Best singles, Rhoda and her band recreate the classic sound of early Jamaican reggae. The song was recorded at Perry Vale Studios in London and produced by guitarist Lenny Bignell, who has worked with almost every legacy Reggae artist. They were accompanied by bassist Andi McLean, drummer Marley Drummond, pianist Roger Rivas, Trumpeter Evan Clegg and Trombonist Robin Hopcraft.
The single follows ‘Version Girl, her first album in 8 years, which was met with critical acclaim. Receiving plaudits from the likes of Mojo, Uncut, Louder Than war and The Daily Mirror. Released in March, the album also stormed the official charts reaching no2 in the Independent Album chart and No1 in the Breakthrough Chart, as well as top ten placements in the Official Vinyl Charts, Official Record Store Chart and Physical Album Chart.
It has been quite a year for Rhoda Dakar, and new single ‘I Don’t Mind’ rounds it off rather brilliantly. Watch this space for even more Rhoda Dakar news in 2024.
