Solid State Revival is Des Murphy. He lives in Shepherds Bush. More crucially he marries lovingly sampled electronic sounds with subtle song writing skills in a 21st century psychedelic head trip … and when he’s not doing that Mr Murphy’s cruising around deserts getting inspiration. Always close at hand on the knobs and dials is co-producer Paul Epwerth (live engineer for the Rapture, LCD Sound System and Royksopp and member of Lomax). Back in the desert, amongst the rolling repetition of the vast landscapes, Des finds bundles of musical inspiration strewn about like tumble weed. Having quit hotly tipped UK act Delakota in 1998 due to major label pressure, Des took off across the Mojave Desert in Southern California and found his own dusty, musical path! Check out title track Mojavewith it’s simple, softly stacked loops of breathtaking clarity, uncomplicated yet hypnotising, and you’ll see how that trip’s sunk in – a touching opus of folktronica with a sleepy vocal from Des – like The Beatles’ Don’t Be Too Long replayed by Pacman on keyboards. Flip the record over and there’s The River, writhing psychedelia springing from it’s source, acid waves crashing amongst swirling eddies of bass. Sweet! Lucky for us, Solid State Revival has stacks more tuneage in the Shepherds Bush area, so expect a serious album ready to grace all discerning collections very soon. In the meantime come see for yourself as Solid State Revival showcases his amazing live talent, performing a stripped back acoustic set. SSR live enlists the accompaniment of James Reid on live guitar and Jay, bashing the ivory on the Zendor Rhodes. So Solid!
